[F] Report of Vancouver BC MiniMeet part Many - 06 May 06 [message #263080 ] Mo, 08 Mai 2006 01:56

Sadly, Lesley couldn't join us.

I got there a bit early because I went for blood tests[1] in the
morning, and let me tell you - don't go to the Cafe du Soleil
(1300 block) at 11:00 am - the place is stuffed solid. (Strangely,
it cleared out at about 11:50 am. It does the same on Sunday.)

My SOGP showed up around 11:15, and we dithered - but
a table for four opened up, so we took it. Jessie arrived at
about 11:30 - after fruitlessly circling the block looking for
parking (the Drive is a popular place on the weekend) for
ages and ages.

We consumed lovely hippie-nostaglia inspired vegetarian
food. I had a tuna melt (I know, I know), my SOGP had
the sweet crepes (melon and peaches in a sweet yoghurt
sauce stuffed inside crepes and then drizzled with chocolate).
Jessi had eggs almost bennie - eggs on Canadian-style
english muffins, veggie ham, and lovely hollandaise.

We discussed the changing of jobs (I just have and Jessie
is expecting to and Lorne has done so about a month ago)
within our respective companies.

We discussed doctors. I have just found a new one that
I am very pleased with (she says I do not need an operation,
so she's my hero). Jessie says when her previous doctor
decided to specialize in something extremely obscure, she
was transferred to a new doctor without her knowledge or
consent. Fortunately, the new doctor seems good. (Finding
a new doctor in Vancouver is a full-time job.)

We discussed electric vehicles. My SOGP wants an electric
motorcycle so bad I can tell he dreams about it in his sleep -
he makes these strangled little "vroom vroom" noises.

After our meal we did a little shopping on the Drive. We
hit the Santa Barbara Market for some veggies (& cookies).
Then we hit Beckwoman's - it's not quite the same as it
used to be. And then Penelope's, where Jessie found
earings and a bracelet to match her necklace.

Jessie, please add anything I've missed.

All in all, a pleasant afternoon. I think Cafe du Soleil would
be a repeat visit (I mean - Lorne & I can eat for $20 including
tip) - but not if our small cadre of Pratchett fanatics should
grow any bigger. There are some interesting-looking places
on Main, the north side of King Edward.

So are we up for the first Saturday in June (03)? Is it too
soon? Over to y'all.

April.

Uh, oh, they're not THAT old, are they?
(When a man turns green, he's eschewed protein.)

I always feel that saying "Of Great Price" implies that the said
Spouseling is actually on the market at a named price, and if the price
were offered you would accept it. It would read much better to me if you
said "Spouseling Of Great Value", if I understand correctly what you
mean,

Just my bit of afpedanting. Sorry. Carry on as you were.

YES! I'll pay more attention to my social-engagements diary that I don't
keep, this time.

Ahh. It reminds me instead of a book of Mormon scripture called "The
Pearl of Great Price" and I start wondering at people's religions.

Oh pfff - like I can leave afpedanting well-enough alone.

See, I am of the opinion that we are all "on the market"
one way or another through most of the minutes of the
days of our lives. Something that "costs a lot" whether
metaphorically or not, is usually prized more than a
comparable item that did not. So, for me, a phrase
indicating dearness, costliness, and general all-over
ooo-shiny-ness works very well.

The concept of "value" however, has become devalued[1] since
I am only every told something is valuable if it is not, and is,
instead a pig in a poke - quite possibly a rancid bacon rind
in a manitoba gladstone, in fact. If I have to do anymore
nonsense about "core values" I may cause someone to
require costly dental renovation, for instance.

I guess, for me, "value" is a term used in bargaining, in shopping -
when something is "good value for the money". And here the real
lodestone is still the ooo-shiny-ness factor.

So. Basically you are meant to realize that even if you offered
me as many tons of gold as there are molecules - no - atoms in
the universe (known or otherwise), it wouldn't be enough for me
to part with my SOGP.

April.

I have the perfect piece of string for your finger - you
get to be the organizing force and general ring master
for this next one.[1]

Over to you, maestro![3]

I see your "ahh" and I raise you a "hmmmm..." - remember:
you can steal the silver candlesticks without any intension of
holding a dinner party.[1]
